This July marks the 750th anniversary of the town of Saxmundham in Suffolk receiving its market charter.
The borough will celebrate this milestone anniversary with a free, family-friendly 750 Festival on Saturday, July 9.
This special event will take place downtown and on Fromus Green from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
In July 1272, King Henry III granted Saxmundham’s first market charter, and one of the highlights of the 750 event is expected to be a midday procession up the steps of the market hall, where a disguised re-enactor en King Henry III will again present the city its market charter.
There will be around 25 re-enactors in the town in a medieval-style encampment, with entertainment and archery available throughout the day.
At 2pm, the ‘King’ will officially open the new Fromus Community Center at the new Saxmundham Hub on Street Farm Road.
The Royal British Legion Band will play a selection of popular tunes, followed by singers from The Rabble Chorus and a local ukulele band. A carousel for children will operate all afternoon. And there will be demonstrations by some of the centre’s regular users. The Smile Café will serve refreshments throughout the afternoon.
Saxmundham Market Square and High Street will be closed to vehicles throughout the day, and a vintage street fair organized by Blackdog Events will be held in the area, with other stalls in the market hall.
Kate Button, from Blackdog Events, said: “There will be a mix of antiques, vintage, artisan and local produce stalls and, with some excellent reserved traders, we think there will be something for everyone.”
Visitors to the town will also be able to see 75 colorful flags which have been installed along the High Street through a collaboration between The Art Station and Saxmundham City Council.
The flags were designed by local artists, community groups and organizations and students from Saxmundham Primary School.
